Jason McKeown - Director of Operations

Read Bio
Jason McKeown’s story of helping others starts from a very young age. While in school, friends and family began to rely on Jason to help with any and all personal issues that they were experiencing. By the time he was in grade 9, his parents had to install a second phone line in their house to accommodate the 2am phone calls from fellow classmates that were being either physically or sexually abused. Basically, a kids help line in a time before there was such a thing.

While in high school, Jason began doing Search and Rescue. Operating in one of the largest geographical areas, the experiences ranged from looking for lost hikers, assisting with evacuations, and doing body recoveries for the coroners. After graduation, Jason enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. His experiences with bullying and harassment while there was rough, but what would eventually become the hardest to bear was the survivors guilt he suffered when he reconnected with members of his unit that had deployed as eager young men and women, only for them to be returned and discarded by CAF as broken and destroyed individuals.

Jason eventually found his way to the Fire service where he served 11 years, before being forced into retirement due to an injury sustained while training. While serving as a Firefighter and being involved in the usual grisly calls, Jason founded a Peer support group. At the time his group was founded, there were only 3 organizations in all of North America that allowed personnel from all branches of Military and Frontline Emergency Personnel to attend.

The @ four decades of helping peers with deeply personal issues enabled Jason to compartmentalize his emotions to deal with the more traumatic aspects of the jobs. This also lead to a formal diagnosis of CPTSD of his own. Through treatment, a proactive care team, and support of family and friends, Jason has been able to bounce back, armed with tools to not only assist his own resilience, but also the ability to assist others in their journey in finding a mentally healthier self.

Jason continues to this day to champion for better Mental Health access for all Military and Frontline Emergency Personnel, regardless of active duty or retired. He firmly believes that we can all lead better lives, we just need to be given the right tools and shown the proper path forward.
